52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: #51 Ann Pattison

This is my fifty-first posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

Ann Pattison married Joseph Robinson 4 December 1819 in Sowerby by Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. They are my great-great-great grandparents. Online searches have not been successful in finding a baptism for Ann. It likely will require looking at microfilm.

From information, I have received from another Robinson researcher, it would appear that Ann and Joseph had five children. Margaret was baptized 14 November 1823. William was baptized 31 July 1825. John, from whom I descend, was baptized 12 March 1827 in Sowerby near Thirsk, Yorkshire. Ann was baptized 19 July 1829. Joseph was baptized 14 August 1831.

I need to do more researching on Ann as I only can account for the time from her marriage to when Joseph was born.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: #42 Robert Fields

This is my forty-second posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

Robert Fields was, as far as can be determined, the father of Jane Fields. He would be my great-great-great grandfather. In the 1851 census, Jane's place of birth is given as Marton Lordship (North Riding, Yorkshire). This place is also known as Marton cum Mosby. It is in Marton cum Mosby that Robert, wife Elizabeth and six children that the family is enumerated in the 1841 census.

Robert's age is given as 40 years old in the 1841 census. In the 1841 census, people over the age of 15 are rounded down to the nearest five. So Robert could have been anywhere between 40 and 44 years old. Robert worked as an agricultural labourer.

Ten years later, Robert aged about 54, born in Marton cum Mosby, Elizabeth born in Bishop Monkton, aged 56 are living in Marton cum Mosby. With them are their son, William, aged 11, and their granddaughter, Hannah Fields.

It looks like this would be Robert's death registration Deaths Mar 1868 FIELDS Robert 72 Easingwold  volume 9d page 223

52 Ancestors in 52 weeks : #36 Jane Fields

This is my thirty-sixth posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

Jane Fields was born 17 March 1829 according to the 1901 census. Family information gives her place of birth as Leeds, England. 1901 is the last census in which I have found her.   I have been unsuccessful in finding her death registration. My grand aunt Margaret told me that Jane died from inflamed appendicitis. My aunt Bessie said that Jane had died before her husband so that narrows it to between 1901 and 1905.
Jane Fields

I have been contacted by another researcher who has found the family in England.

Jane Fields married John Robinson. Their marriage was registered in the December quarter of 1848 in They had seven known children.

First born was named Joseph born about 1849. There is a jump to about 1854 when William was born. Mary Ann was born about 1856. She gave her age as 20 when she married in 1876 and that she was born in Canada. Next was Elizabeth Fields. Family information said that she was born 6 December 1859 in Toronto.

In 1851 Jane and her husband, John and their son Joseph were living at 7 Union Row in North Allerton, North Yorkshire. They lived with her sister, Phoebe and brother-in-law John Spence. The family hasn't been found in the 1861 Census in Canada or England.

In 1871, the family was living in Collingwood, Township, Grey County, Ontario. Sarah Jane was born about 1861. Next came Robert Robinson who was born 15 November 1862 in Collingwood (but not sure whether this was the town or the township). Isabella often referred to as Belle was born about 1865. The last child was Eliza Ann. The 1871 census gives her age as 5 but in the 1881 census they are shown as two years apart in age.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #35 John Robinson

This is my thirty-fifth posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

This week's focus is John Robinson, my great-great grandfather. I wrote, during this challenge, about his daughter, Elizabeth Fields Robinson who married James Love. I was always told by John's grand-daughter, Margaret, that Elizabeth had been born in Muddy York around 1859. Recently, I received an email from the wife of John's descendants, saying that in their research, they found the Robinson's in Yorkshire. I am still not sure if Elizabeth was born before they came to Canada. Census records says she was born in Ontario.

John was born about 1828 in Yorkshire, England. The 1901 census gives a date of birth of 3 March 1828. A search in Familysearch.org gives a John Robinson, son of Joseph and Ann Robinson being baptized 12 March 1827 in Sowerby by Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. In 1851, as shown in the census for Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, John and his wife Jane had one child, Joseph, who  was two years old. John was 24 and Jane 23. John was working as a rail labourer. It gives his place of birth as Sowerby, Yorkshire. They are living with James Spense, a rail labourer and his wife Phebe. John and Jane are listed as brother-in-law and sister-in-law of the head of the household, James.

John's death registration gives his place of birth as Sourby, England. Seventy-nine year old John died of dropsy. His son-in-law, James Love was the informant.

To date, I have not located John and family in 1861 in either England or Ontario.

In 1871, the family lived in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario. John was a farmer. He could neither read or write. The children's ages ranged from 17 to 5. The eldest, William, had been born in England. The next child was Elizabeth, aged 11, born in Ontario. The family information had said that they had lived in Collingwood on the mountain to differentiate it from the village of Collingwood in Simcoe, County.

Between 1871 and 1881, the family moved to Manitoulin Island. By 1881 some of the children have left home. Robert, Isabella and Eliza Ann are still living at home. Living nearby is Joseph and family.

By 1901, John and Jane were living alone. Four years later, John died 5 June 1905 in Carnarvon Township, Mantioulin Island, Ontario. It indicates that he was married. The choice for marital status was single or married. M is circled.

Here is a photo of John and Jane in their later years.

I believe this is John when he was younger.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: #7 Elizabeth Fields Robinson

When my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Fields Robinson exchanged marriage vows on 14 November 1876 with James Love, her marriage registration indicates that she did not know where she was born. According to her daughter, Margaret, she was born in Muddy York. So where is Muddy York? Muddy York is the nick-name for Toronto. They were married by Methodist minister, William Hall. James' brother Thomas and his half-sister Agnes Vincer were their witnesses.

Where they lived from the time of her birth until the family appears in the 1871 census in Collingwood Township, Grey County is not known. It is also known as Collingwood on the Mountain to differentiate between the town of Collingwood in Simcoe County and the Township. Her parents were John Robinson and Jane Fields. Elizabeth had two older brothers, Joseph and William, who were born in England. She had four younger sisters: Sarah Jane, Isabella "Belle" and Eliza Ann and Mary Ann. She had one younger brother, Robert.

Sometime during the 1870s, the family moved to Manitoulin Island and there Elizabeth met James Love.

The couple had, it is believed, ten children but not all children lived to adulthood. One side of the monument in the Mindemoya cemetery lists the children who died young. It is hard to read. My mom thought there might have been errors when the stone was re-carved.

The first child, Jane was born 19 March 1879 and died 28 March 1879. [dates not certain.] Next was Agnes Hamilton Love named for her grandmother. I have found a birth registration for her that was registered 3 March 1880 giving her date of birth as 3 October 1879. There is something wrong with the dates for these two babies. Neither of them appear on the 1881 census. Cora Ida Love was born 30 March 1881. She lived to the age of 91 and outlived two husbands. Norman Luther Love was born 23 June 1883. He also died young. No death registration has been found for him.  John Thomas Love, who was my grandfather, was born 25 August 1884. Four years later, they had Laura Jane on 16 August 1888. Next came Ethel Mae on 30 September 1891. James Lorne Love was born 14 April 1893 and died five years, five months and 23 days later on 7 October 1898 of inflammation. Margaret Isabel Love was born 14 January 1896. The last child was Grace Elizabeth Love born 21 August 1898.
James Love, Elizabeth Love, in front Margaret Love, Laura Love, John Robinson, Jane Robinson,  Cora Love, Ethel Love, John Love with sister Grace in his arms (ca 1902)

Tragedy struck the family on 21 August 1914 when Elizabeth's husband, James was killed in a farm accident. Now Elizabeth was a widow at the age of 55. Her daughters Margaret and Grace were unmarried. She was fortunate to have her son, John living across the lane who would take over the farm.

I am sure she saw many happy times in her life. She was able to travel to southern Ontario to attend Robinson family reunions in Mitchell.
Margaret Love with her mother. Photo taken in Markdale on their way to Mitchell.

Margaret remained at home until her mother's death to care for her. Elizabeth died 16 May 1932 from pneumonia.

There are several family trees on Ancestry where it would appear that the submitters have intertwined the records of Elizabeth Robinson possibly with an |Eliza Ann Robinson.

Elizabeth Fields Love (nee Robinson) - Carnival of Genealogy #103

Elizabeth Fields Love (nee Robinson) would be my great-grandmother. I salute her as part of the Carnival of Genealogy to honour women during Women's History Month.

I never knew her but she was a special person in my mother's life as she lived across the lane from her. I am fortunate to have photos of my great-grandmother Love as I have some of her daughter Margaret's photos. So what have I learned about her from my research?
Agnes Elizabeth "Bessie" Love (grand-daughter), Elizabeth Fields Love (nee Robinson), Margaret Love (daughter), Winnifred Love (grand-daughter), Marion Love (grand-daughter) 1923
According to Margaret, her mother was born in Muddy York, now part of the City of Toronto, on 6 December 1859 to John Robinson and Jane Fields. According to Lost Towns along the River when talking about the Town of York, the article explains it got the name Muddy York because of the clay soil. The streets were poorly maintained.

I have been unable to find Elizabeth with parents in census records until 1871 when the family is in Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario. My mother told me that her grandmother had lived on Collingwood on the Mountain. (This was to differentiate between the town of Collingwood in Simcoe County.) Elizabeth had two older brothers, Joseph and William, who were born in England. She had four younger sisters: Sarah Jane, Isabella "Belle" and Eliza Ann and Mary Ann. She had one younger brother, Robert.

Sometime during the 1870s, the family moved to Manitoulin Island and there Elizabeth met James Love. James had come to Manitoulin Island, it is said, in September 1870 with this brothers, Thomas and Robert and his half-brother, William Vincer to work in the lumber camps at Michael's Bay. The brothers bought farmland on Lake Mindemoya. His brother, Robert drowned when the boat he was travelling went down, when he was on his way back to Southern Ontario to get his mother and step-father.

James settled on the farm in 1872. On 14 November 1876, James and Elizabeth Fields were married by Methodist minister, William Hall. James' brother Thomas and his half-sister Agnes were their witnesses.

The couple had, it is believed, ten children but not all children survived. One side of the monument in the Mindemoya cemetery lists the children who died young. It is hard to read. My mom thought there might have been errors when the stone was re-carved. The first child, Jane was born 19 March 1879 and died 28 March 1879. Cora Ida Love was born 30 March 1881. She lived to the age of 91 and outlived two husbands. Norman Luther Love was born 23 June 1883. He also died young. No death registration has been found for him.  John Thomas Love, who became my grandfather, was born 25 August 1884. He married my grandmother, Janet Gertrude Johnston 11 May 1909. They would raise their family on the family farm across the lane from his parents.

On 16 August 1888, Laura Jane Love was born to James and Elizabeth. Three years later, they had Laura Jane on 16 August 1888.

John Thomas Love (1884-1961) [my paternal grandfather] and in his arms Grace Love (1898-1971)

It must have been difficult for Elizabeth and James to lose some children so young. My grandfather, John Thomas Love, was their only son to survive to adulthood.

Elizabeth and James and the family attended the Presbyterian Church in Mindemoya. The family was very involved with the church as James served as Sunday School superintendent for over twenty years and prayer meetings were held in their home.

James and Ellizabeth Love 29 June 1914

Tragedy struck the family on 21 August 1914. It was early morning, about 8 a.m. and James was already at work in the barn unloading oats. Newspaper reports provide some details of what happened. James was unloading the oats and he was standing on a beam at the top of the barn operating part of the uploaders, when the rope gave way and the heavy load suddenly drew the machine back. It caught him in the side and it threw him with great force through the side of the barn. He landed face down at least ten feet from the barn. My aunt Bessie (Agnes Elizabeth) told me that although she was only four years old at the time, she remembers hearing the ringing of the bell that normally called the farm workers and family to meals. This alerted the family that something was wrong.

James remained unconscious and died near noon. His death registration lists the cause of death as shock due to the fall. Dr. R. W. Davis attended.

Now Elizabeth was a widow at the age of 55. Her daughters Margaret and Grace were unmarried. She was fortunate to have her son, John living across the lane.

I am sure she saw many happy times in her life. She was able to travel to southern Ontario to attend Robinson family reunions in Mitchell.

Margaret remained at home until her mother's death to care for her. Elizabeth died 16 16 May 1932.

Love Family ca 1902

This photo shows my grandfather, great-grandparents and my great great grandparents and some of my great aunts.

The photo is a precious one and was part of the Margaret Love collection. The original photo is very faint now. It is in sepia tones but the above was scanned as black and white. It is mounted on cardboard. The inscription on the back is "our house at home when Grace was small about 1902". Grace was born 21 August 1898. She is the one in the arms of my grandfather on the right. I think she looks younger than 3 so the photo may have been taken earlier than 1902.

On the photos, someone, likely Margaret, has placed an initial on each person. These markings are faint.

The photo shows from left to right.

In the background, is most likely Josias Hopkins who was to marry Cora Love. There is a letter J on him that I hadn't noticed until today.

James and Elizabeth Love had also four other children who died quite young.
