52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: #41 Thomas Cowley

This is my forty-first posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

Thomas Cowley, my great-great-great grandfather was born likely in Donnington, Gloucestershire, England, between 1804 and 1806. 

Thomas Cowley is 35 years old as shown in the 1841 census living in Donnington, Gloucestershire, England. Living with him are Hannah age 14 and Thomas age 7. He is listed as an agricultual labourer. Ten years later, his daughter Hannah Pugh, age 23, and Mary Ann Pugh, age 6 months, are living with him. By the time of the next census, Hannah is living in the workhouse with two children. 

Did Thomas die between 1851 and 1861? A search of Free bmd database only lists one possible candidate if he remained living in the district of Stow on the Wold.  This would be Death registered in the March quarter of 1860 Cowley Thomas Stow on W  district 6a  page 251. With this information, I can order his death registration from the GRO.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks : #28 Hannah Cowley

This is my twenty-eighth  posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge.

Hannah Cowley is my great-great grandmother. I have written about her before but this will be a round-up of what I know about her. 

Hannah Cowley, daughter of Thomas Cowley was born about 1826 in Donnington, Gloucestershire. No mother is listed in the 1841 census. Hannah had a brother, Thomas, seven years younger than her. 

Hannah married Charles Pugh 13 May 1850 at the King Sutton's Northampton Parish Church. In the 1851 census she is listed as Hannah Pugh, married woman and daughter in the home of Thomas Cowley in Donnington, Gloucestershire. She has a baby Mary Ann, 6 months, born in Donnington. Ten years later, she and her two children are living in the Maugersbury Workhouse: Mary 11 born at Donnington and Emily 10 months born at Maugersbury Workhouse. Hannah is listed as a pauper. 

Hannah married William Clifford 7 October 1865 in the Baptist Chapel of Stow on the Wold. Their witnesses were Richard James, deputy Register and Sarah James. Both Hannah and William are listed as living in Lower Swell when they got married. Hannah was 39 years old.

In 1871, Hannah is married to William Clifford with Emily, listed as aged 11 as Emily Clifford, and another child, Sarah,  aged 6, and born in Stow on the Wold.) Purchase of a birth registration may answer the question whether William and Hannah had a child before their marriage.

Both made their mark; their witnesses were Richard James, Deputy Registrar and Sarah James, both made their mark.

How did Hannah and William meet? They would most likely have met while Hannah and Mary Ann were living with Hannah's father, as they lived in the same area. The question still remains how did they get together to marry? William's first wife had died. Charles Pugh is also deceased.

In 1881 and 1891, Hannah and William were living in Broadwell. William died about 1895. After his death, at some point moved to Stow on the Wold and lived with her daughter, Sarah, and her family

Hannah died 7 March 1903 in Stow on the Wold.

Using the computation guidelines, my person of interest this evening is #19: Hannah Cowley, my great great grandmother.

I have written about Hannah Cowley and the process of finding the marriage registration for her second marriage to William Clifford in a blog post but I will give a little more information today. As per the instructions from Randy, we are to share three things about her.

1. Hannah Cowley, daughter of Thomas Cowley married first Charles Pugh 13 May 1850 at King Sutton's Northampton Parish Church.

2. In the 1851 census she is listed as Hannah Pugh, married woman and daughter in the home of Thomas Cowley in Donnington, Gloucestershire. She has a baby Mary Ann 6 months born in Donnington.


3. In the 1861 census, Hannah Pugh is in Maugersbury Workhouse, with two children: Mary 11 born at Donnington and Emily 10 months born at Maugersbury Workhouse. Hannah is listed as a pauper.

Marriage of William Clifford to Hannah Pugh nee Cowley

In my posting at the beginning of the year I posted the following

Now I am really side-tracked, I decided that I am going after a marriage for William Clifford to Hannah Pugh nee Cowley. Now this one took a little longer but it was worth it. This is not the first time that I tried to find the marriage registration entry for them. I knew that they were likely married between 1861 when Hannah Pugh was found on the census in the workhouse and the 1871 census where she appears as Hannah Clifford.The most likely result was Marriages Dec 1865 Pugh Hannah Stow on W 6a 7_1

On the original page of the indexes by quarter by surname where Hannah Pugh appeared, the page number was very faint. A range of pages was suggested 759 to 785. I downloaded the file to see if page enhancement might be useful. It looked like 781. I followed the instructions on how to search page numbers. I checked several and found the one I wanted. -- William Clifford was listed on page 781.

Yesterday, the document - a certified copy of an entry of marriage arrived in the mail from the General Register Office in England.

I am very happy to now have this document. It is part of the story of my great grandmother. There are still missing parts of the story but soon I am going to present what I know in several parts.
