52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2014 edition - Wrap up

Well, I made it through this challenge for 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks . Somehow, I wrote about the same person twice: Thomas Love in week 11 and 29.

Looking at my ancestors (direct line), I discover that I did not write about Josiah Hemingway Johnston, a great grandfather, and Sarah Peach, a great-great-great grandmother and a few others.

Amy Johnson Crow has issued another challenge for 2015 but with themes that we can use for each week's postings. I don't know yet to what degree I will participate next year but I am sure I will write about those of my direct line that I have missed.

I need to go through the articles that I wrote and see where I have identified missing information. Then I need to decide which ones I will work on this year.

Thank you to Amy for this year's challenge. It is interesting to see what others have written (I haven't read all of them).

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #52 Sarah Dargavel

This is my fifty-second   posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge.

Sarah Dargavel was the daughter of John Dargavel and Margaret Dowell [McDowell?]. She was baptized the 29 March 1764 in the Parish of Penninghome, Wigtownshire, Scotland. A cousin has posted the copy of the Parish record on her family tree on Ancestry. Sarah married Andrew McKenzie, but I haven't found the marriage record yet.

So far two children have been identified. The first is James McKenzie, baptized 3 December 1791, from whom I descend. The other is William McKenzie baptized 4 March 1795.

Sarah and Andrew and family need more research in Scottish records.

A Caroling we go - Candlelight Carol

It is so hard to choose a favourite carol for the Bloggers' Christmas Caroling. There are the well known classics but there are many new pieces too that I enjoy hearing or singing.

Candlelight Carol by John Rutter - a contemporary piece. Unfortunately, the rendition I chose in 2014 is no longer available to share. Search the title on YouTube for different choirs singing this number.

Merry Christmas!

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: #51 Ann Pattison

This is my fifty-first posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

Ann Pattison married Joseph Robinson 4 December 1819 in Sowerby by Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. They are my great-great-great grandparents. Online searches have not been successful in finding a baptism for Ann. It likely will require looking at microfilm.

From information, I have received from another Robinson researcher, it would appear that Ann and Joseph had five children. Margaret was baptized 14 November 1823. William was baptized 31 July 1825. John, from whom I descend, was baptized 12 March 1827 in Sowerby near Thirsk, Yorkshire. Ann was baptized 19 July 1829. Joseph was baptized 14 August 1831.

I need to do more researching on Ann as I only can account for the time from her marriage to when Joseph was born.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #49 Marion Service

This is my forty-ninth posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

This posting is about my great-great-great grandmother, Marion Service. Her first name is sometimes written/indexed as Marrion.

Using calculations based on the 1851 and 1861 census, Marion was born about 1790 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. If that information is correct, she was most likely the daughter of James Service and Agnes Cunningham. Their daughter Marion was born 23 February 1790 and baptized 28 February 1790.

She married Adam Hamilton on 2 October 1813, in  Kilwinning Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had nine children.

The first child was John  born 6 July 1814 in Kilwining, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was baptized 31 July 1814.

The rest of the children were baptized in the Parish Church of Ardrossan. Next came, James born 15 April 1816 and was baptized 28 April 1816. Next they had another son, Adam. He was born 14 July and baptized the 20 July 1817.

Their first daughter was Agnes, my great-great grandmother. She was born 14 July 1819 and baptized 1 August of that year. Next came another son, also named James. He was born 4 May 1821 and baptized on the 13th. Their second daughter was Marion born 16 August 1823 and baptized 30 August 1823. Their seventh child and another daughter was Barbara. She was born 18 August 1825 and baptized 4 September 1825. Child number eight was Thomas. He was born 28 July 1827 and baptized on 12 August. Their last child was Robert who was born and baptized 18 October 1829.

Marion outlived her husband. Ancestry only has the index and extractions from the census. In 1841, she and five of the children were living on Montgomery Street Lane in Ardrossan. The census listings give them as follows: Marion 50 (50-54), Agnes 20 (20-24), James 20 (20-24), Marion 20 (age 20-24), Thomas 13 and Robert 11.

In 1851, it looks like Marion, aged 61, was living or visiting with her daughter, Marion and family. The family is living on Glasgow Street. In the Ancestry index her surname has been transcribed as Hamitton. Marion (the daughter) is 28 and her husband Robert Dempster is 28. There are two children: William, 3 and Adam, 1. There is a marriage of Marion Hamilton and Robert Dempster 19 July 1847 in Ardrossan.

In 1861, Marion, aged 72, was either living with or visiting another one of her sons. James was living in Dalry. James is 40. His wife, Margaret is 44 and born in Saltcoats. The children are Adam 17, Helen 15, Agness 11, James 9 and Margaret 3. There is also a nephew of James, John Reid, aged 25.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #48 Adam Hamilton

This is my forty-eighth posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

This week my focus is Adam Hamilton, my great-great-great grandfather. I do not know too much about him.

Adam Hamilton was born  in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland in about 1789.

He married Marion Service 2 October 1813, in  Kilwinning Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.

In the baptismal registers listing the baptisms of their children, his occupation is listed as Smith.

It would appear that Adam died prior to the 1841 census.

John was a widower when he married Sarah Peach. The banns were read in the church, on 2, 9 and 16 September 1804. Their marriage took place in the Oversley Parish Church on 16 October 1804.

In 1841, John and Sarah were living together in the Parish of Arrow. Sarah died about 1848. In 1851, John is living with his son John and wife Hannah and family. By the next census he is living with Henry and Eliza Mucklow.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #46 John Mucklow

This is my forty-sixth posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge

John Mucklow was my great-great grandfather. John was born 21 August 1821 in Oversley near Alcester, Warwickshire and baptized in the Arrow Parish Church two days later.

He married Hannah James 11 September 1843 in Alcester. They lived most of their lives as a couple in the same area. The census records show where they lived. In 1851, the family was living in Oversley. In 1861, they were in Exhall and in 1871 in Haselor. It looks like they spent their latter years of their lives in Aston Cantlow (1881-1901 census records). John and Hannah had eleven known children.

John was a gamekeeper for Sir W. Throckmorton. It is not known whether he worked for anyone else. He presented the case of two men with snares on property belonging to Mr. Lane in the parish of Haselor on the 14th ult.  In an article from the Redditch Advertiser, Redditch, Worcestershire and  it was dated 6th ending with ber in the month 1863. So the case was before the court during September, October or November.

Closer look at the clipping shows a small heading that is partly cut off.

"PETTY SESSIONS. NOVEMBER [?] - Before [-?-  -?-], [-?-] Fisher, and J. Brown, Esqrs.

GAME - Charles Tredgall and George Louch, of Alcester, were charged with [?] snares for the destruction of game on land belonging to Mr. Lane, in the parish of Haselor, on the 14th, ult.

John Mucklow, gamekeeper to Sir W. Throckmorton, [laid?] the information, and Woodward, a witness proved the case stating that between five and six o'clock in the evening of the above day, he met the defendants in the lane leading from Haselor to Aston, and there saw the defendant Tredgall set a snare in a [meuse?] or run on the bank, and saw several snares that were set within a short distance along the road that defendants came, and the defendant Louch signalled to Tredgall that some one was near, but did not see Louch set any snares, or with any in his possession.  . . .
Only one brief mention of John but oh so important in the story of his life.
The Throckmortons have been owners of Coughton Court since 1409. This large estate is still lived in by the family but it is now part of the National Trust system.

John must have been a well loved servant for his tombstone bore the inscription.

In Memory of
a Faithful Servant
John Mucklow
Born Aug. 21 1821
Died Nov. 6 1904
aged 83

John is buried in John the Baptist Church Cemetery in Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire, England.
