This posting is about my great-great-great grandmother, Marion Service. Her first name is sometimes written/indexed as Marrion.
Using calculations based on the 1851 and 1861 census, Marion was born about 1790 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. If that information is correct, she was most likely the daughter of James Service and Agnes Cunningham. Their daughter Marion was born 23 February 1790 and baptized 28 February 1790.
She married Adam Hamilton on 2 October 1813, in Kilwinning Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. They had nine children.
The first child was John born 6 July 1814 in Kilwining, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was baptized 31 July 1814.
The rest of the children were baptized in the Parish Church of Ardrossan. Next came, James born 15 April 1816 and was baptized 28 April 1816. Next they had another son, Adam. He was born 14 July and baptized the 20 July 1817.
Their first daughter was Agnes, my great-great grandmother. She was born 14 July 1819 and baptized 1 August of that year. Next came another son, also named James. He was born 4 May 1821 and baptized on the 13th. Their second daughter was Marion born 16 August 1823 and baptized 30 August 1823. Their seventh child and another daughter was Barbara. She was born 18 August 1825 and baptized 4 September 1825. Child number eight was Thomas. He was born 28 July 1827 and baptized on 12 August. Their last child was Robert who was born and baptized 18 October 1829.
Marion outlived her husband. Ancestry only has the index and extractions from the census. In 1841, she and five of the children were living on Montgomery Street Lane in Ardrossan. The census listings give them as follows: Marion 50 (50-54), Agnes 20 (20-24), James 20 (20-24), Marion 20 (age 20-24), Thomas 13 and Robert 11.
In 1851, it looks like Marion, aged 61, was living or visiting with her daughter, Marion and family. The family is living on Glasgow Street. In the Ancestry index her surname has been transcribed as Hamitton. Marion (the daughter) is 28 and her husband Robert Dempster is 28. There are two children: William, 3 and Adam, 1. There is a marriage of Marion Hamilton and Robert Dempster 19 July 1847 in Ardrossan.
In 1861, Marion, aged 72, was either living with or visiting another one of her sons. James was living in Dalry. James is 40. His wife, Margaret is 44 and born in Saltcoats. The children are Adam 17, Helen 15, Agness 11, James 9 and Margaret 3. There is also a nephew of James, John Reid, aged 25.

Several years ago when I was in Salt Lake City, I looked at parish records. For some reason, I don't have photos of several. Perhaps, the copies were not readable in the photos that I took. For those, I have shared the information from Family Search indexes.

I read this with great interest because I live near Kilwinning. My daughter lived in Ardrossan until recently, she now lives in Saltcoats. My late in-laws lived in Kilwinning too so I've had reason to visit the town often in the past. Because most of my forbears haled from Scotland I use the Scotlands People website, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, to track down certificates, census, etc. You're so very nearly at the end of your personal challenge and I have enjoyed reading all your posts too. Thank you for sharing. Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteThank you Elizabeth for stopping by and leaving your comment. I haven't yet used the Scotlandspeople site. I should investigate what is available. On Ancestry, we are limited in what we get of Scottish records.
