52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks #1 Josiah Hemingway Johnston

This is my first  posting for the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2015 edition

Missed in last year's challenge was Josiah Hemingway Johnston, my great grandfather. Josiah was born 17 August 1845 in Markham Township to David Johnston and Hannah Hemingway.

He married Agnes Chambers 22 July 1873 in Toronto. Josiah was a miller. A year later Isaac was born in Altona, Pickering Township. Their daughter, Mary, was born two years later, also in Altona. No birth registration has been found for James Earnest, so his place of birth and where the family was living is not known. When Gordon was born in 1880, the family had moved to the Manitoulin and were living in Sandfield Township. On Amy's birth registration, in 1892, their address was given as lot 16, concession 11 Sandfield.

Josiah was the enumerator for the 1901 census for Sandfield. He attended meetings of the Reform Association and held an office in the Sons of Temperance (Through the Years, October 1991 -- Big Lake, 1908). In an article about Sandfield Township that appeared in Through the Years, 1986, It says that J. H. Johnston was the township clerk for a time.

Josiah died 4 April 1919 in Sandfield Township. The death register indicates the cause of Josiah's death was Uraemia. He is buried in the Big Lake Cemetery on Manitoulin Island.
